A Sunday Thought

Heres my thought: get a second job.
Why? Save money for our wedding and pay off some school debt before the wedding.
Where? Somewhere fun, something I don't mind doing or enjoy doing, so I'm not dreading the second job every other day. Possibly a clothing store.

Is this actually going to happen? Probably not.

I really want to get a second job and save every single penny from that job for the wedding but the more I think of it the more I hate the idea. I only work 3 days a week at my current job and that is considered full-time since they are 12 hour shifts. So my days off are nice, I can relax, catch up on house work, do nothing, go grocery shopping! Oh now my life just sounds pathetic! But really, I love my 4 days off a week and I love my current job!
I'm always after more money, unfortunately, I wish this wasn't so! Which is why I'm constantly in school, I always want to better myself. I want to make the most money possible in my career field. I will get there, but obviously, things take time and especially in the medical field.

If I got a second job I would get it probably in the retail world- a clothing boutique, something simple where I could pick the days I work and I wouldn't be working 9-5 or any more 12 hour shifts than I already do!

Is this smart? Did any of y'all get a second job for wedding expenses? I don't know if I can handle it but I really want to do it!
I need some opinions here guys....

  1. I'm not sure if you're the kind of person who enjoys being around kids but I'm sure you could find a nannying job if your days off from job #1 are always the same day! I've been nannying as my main job for almost 3 years while in school and it's been great!

  2. I am a teacher and I didn't get a second job to pay for our wedding cause my parents paid for it but I did get one to put away money for our down payment on our house. I tutored a 3 days a week for about an hour and a half after my teaching day was over.

  3. From my experience working in retail, the hours are pretty flexible. You can pick your availability for days you want to be scheduled and even if you prefer to work mornings, afternoons, or evenings! The tough part about working in retail is resisting the temptation to buy clothes - even if you aren't necessarily "into" a brand being around the product gets tempting. If you do get a job in retail, consider setting up a separate part of your bank account for your paycheck to be deposited into so you won't be tempted to spend the money elsewhere!

  4. Working retail IS fun. The only thing I don't recommend is trying to work 7 days a week- I made that mistake. The money was tempting and I loved my retail job so I thought "Hey, why not open my availability?" I ended up tired all the time, even when I only worked a few hour shift, and dreading going to a job I once adored. I think a second job would be a great thing, just make sure you also save time for yourself!

  5. I really enjoyed the 6 month gap before graduating and then moving to Charlotte where I held about 4 part-time jobs. I was able to make a lot of money before we moved, and I held some pretty interesting positions. My favorite was working at a vineyard in the tasting room. If you like beer/wine, look into it! They are always really flexible with schedules. Good luck!

  6. Luckily working in retail, it's easy to be part time and if you schedule is set (as far as what days of the week you work), you can probably set a schedule with your second job. I think it's a great idea to get that second job so you can save 100% of that income for your wedding while still having other money come in, but us bloggers love our clothes, so that might be something to think about. The other day when I was in VS, the girls were all talking about how they hardly take home a paycheck because all of the cute stuff there!

I've been thinking A LOT about getting a second job too because I only work 20 hours a week right now and my classes are either online or at night, but I LOVE having my free time so I totally get it. I'd love to put 100% of a second job income toward moving out of my parents house, so if you find something to motivate you to bite the bullet and do it, let me know your secret! :)

  7. I've gotten a "second job" this summer to earn some extra money and honestly, it's been more stressful than I thought. Not because of the hours or because of the nature of the job. But I had all these high hopes of making lots and lots of extra money, putting some in savings, using some to buy frivolous things (which I feel like I never do anymore) but this "extra" money hasn't really been as much as my high hopes had wanted and it's still gone towards boring stuff like groceries and bills. if you have a set goal in mind of what you're saving for (like your wedding) it might be better but in my experience it was one of those things that seemed so much better in my head haha
